The ETA Australia is an online electronic travel authority, similar to the United States ESTA, that allows visas for Australia to be issued electronically, eliminating the need to supply paper applications to an embassy.
The majority of foreign passport holders are required to get one type of visa for Australia before traveling to the country, with the exception of New Zealand citizens. The ETA subclass 601 visa is available for citizens of 8 countries online, while citizens of European states can instead apply for the eVisitor (subclass 651) online.
Before applying for ETA, it’s necessary to meet the Australia visa requirements, which involve having a valid passport from an eligible country valid for at least 3 months upon entry to Australia.
Eligible citizens can get the ETA Australia through the Australia visa application online. Applicants are required to complete the form with personal information such as full name, nationality, address and contact telephone. All the data from the passport information page will also be requested, such as document number and issue/expiry dates.
It’s required to indicate whether the stay is for tourism or business, as well as provide credit/debit card details to pay the visa fee. A current email address to which the ETA will be sent upon approval is also required.
It’s necessary to meet the Health and Character requirements for Australia before the 601 visa Australia can be approved. Those who have served more than 1 year of jail time are not eligible to apply for the ETA visa Australia online but may apply for an Australia visitor visa or another type of visa.
The ETA visa Australia is valid for the following purposes:
- A holiday in Australia
- Entering Australia during a cruise (if a round trip cruise, as the time spent on the cruise counts as time spent in Australia).
- Visiting family or friends.
- Business purposes ( including attending a conference, trade fair or seminar, as long as the applicant is not paid to attend by organizers)
- To study or complete a training course (as long as the studies are not the main reason for traveling to Australia. In such cases a student visa will be required)
- To participate in volunteer work ( paid work is not permitted if traveling with the 601 visa Australia)
The ETA visa for Australia permits the holder to stay in Australia for 90 consecutive days (3 months). However, it is a multiple-entry visa with a total validity of 12 months for entry to Australia.
Travelers can enter and leave Australia various times until the ETA Australia or corresponding passport expires, whichever comes first.
All foreign citizens arriving in Australia are required to complete an Incoming Passenger Card, including ETA Australia visa holders. This document provides passenger identification and a record of the traveler’s entry to Australia and also serves as a declaration that the non-Australian citizen meets the health and character requirements.
Travelers will be able to get through border control faster if they use one of the SmartGates installed at the 9 major airports in Australia. This automated process uses facial recognition and the traveler’s biometric passport to verify their identity and allow them access to the country.
The eVisitor for Australia is an online travel authority that electronically issues visas for Australia. Similar to the ESTA system in the United States, the eVisitor eliminates the need to physically go to an embassy or consulate to present a paper application.
The current eVisitor authorization was introduced in 2008 to create a mutual short stay travel arrangement between Australian nationals and citizens of the European Union within the existing framework of the Australian visa system.
The eVisitor visa subclass 651 is available for citizens of European Countries online, while citizens of 8 non-European countries can instead apply for the ETA Australia (subclass 601) online.
Citizens traveling for tourism or business who are not eligible for eVisitor and ETA online can apply for an Australia visitor visa from a consulate or embassy.
It’s necessary to meet the Australia visa requirements before applying for the Australian 651 visa. All applicants will be required to have a passport valid for at least 3 months from entry date to Australia, from an eVisitor eligible country.
It will be required to provide a current email address at which to receive the eVisitor visa Australia, as well as to pay the eVisitor fee using a valid credit card or debit card.
Travelers will also need to indicate if coming to Australia for tourism or business purposes.
To apply for eVisitor Australia through the Australia visa application online, applicants must complete a form with their full name, address and phone number, as well as all the data from the passport information page, including country of birth, passport number and expiry date.
Before the eVisitor can be approved, the applicant will also have to meet the Health and Character requirements for Australia. These involve not having a health condition that poses a public risk or burden to the Australian community, and not having a serious criminal record or having served jail time.
Additional family members cannot be included in an individual’s application. A separate application must be made for each family member who requires the Australia eVisitor, including those listed on the applicant’s passport.
The eVisitor visa Australia allows the traveler a stay for tourism to:
- Holiday in Australia
- Visit family or friends
- Enter Australia on a cruise (time spent on the cruise counts as time spent in Australia, if a round trip cruise).
The 651 visa for Australia also allows for business visits for activities such as to make general business inquiries, to negotiate or review a business contract, or to attend a seminar, conference or trade fair (if the organizers haven’t paid the applicant to participate).
Paid work in Austrailia is not permitted with the eVisitor visa, although they may work in an unpaid volunteer role. The eVisitor does allow the holder to study or receive professional training, but only if the studies are not the main reason for visiting.
Australia offers a wide variety of diverse landscapes to explore, from dry deserts to snowy mountains, through tropical rain forests. Add in the chance to see exotic fauna like kangaroos and koala bears in the wild, and it’s no surprise that Australia is an increasingly popular holiday destination. Although the majority of passport holders require some kind of Australia visa to enter the country, many citizens are able to easily get an ETA or eVisitor visa for short stays online. However, there is one major sticking point: applicants who wish to travel to Australia with a criminal record will not be eligible to complete an Australia visa application online.
Citizens of 60 countries eligible to apply for either an Australia eVisitor or ETA online visa first have to fulfill several Australia visa requirements before the visa will be approved. These include meeting certain character provisions that serve as an Australia criminal record check for visa approval.
The applicant must show that they have no intention to:
- Harass, molest, intimidate, or stalk another person
- Incite discord within, or vilify any part of, the Australian community
- Pose any danger to the Australian community
Applicants may also be asked to supply supporting documentation in order to verify their character, including a police certificate (penal clearance certificate) from every country in which they lived and a letter from an employer to verify good conduct. Those who have served more than 12 months in any military force are required to provide a military certificate proving no criminal offense was committed during time served.
If the applicant has no substantial criminal record and a report of good behavior in general, then the e-visa for Australia will be granted.
In order to apply for the ETA or eVisitor visa online and travel to Australia, the applicant must not:
- Have any conviction that resulted in a prison sentence of 12 months or more (regardless of time served)
- Have been convicted for two or more offenses and the combined length of all your sentences amounts to 12 months or more (regardless of time served)
- Have a suspended prison sentence where the period served, had it not been suspended, was 12 months or more.
- Have been convicted of domestic violence. This applies to all offenders regardless of the length of their conviction and the country the crime was committed in.
The applicant will not be eligible to apply for the Australia e-visa online if they have any of the above convictions. However, those unable to get an eVisitor or ETA may still be able to travel to Australia with a criminal record.
Travelers who don’t meet the character requirements or pass the Australia criminal record check may still apply for the Australia visitor visa through an Australian embassy.
When applying, the traveler must:
- Be upfront about any criminal offenses
- Answer any questions truthfully
- Supply all the information requested
The most important thing is to be truthful, as the Australian Immigration Department will take all of the circumstances surrounding an individual case into account. The visa for Australia may be granted even if the character requirements are not met, depending on the traveler’s individual circumstances.
However, if an Australia criminal record check is carried out and the applicant is found to not have been truthful about their criminal record history, then the application will be refused.
